When I was growing up, it seemed as if the family pet collection grew on a monthly basis. It started with goldfish. Then my brother and sister accidentally killed the goldfish, because they tried to pet them. My mom decided to go with hamsters thereafter, as they are a little more accustomed to petting. Various parakeets, cats, dogs and lizards followed. The point of this illustration is that I loved animals. Absolutely adored them. For most kids being around animals is not only fun, but it also creates responsibility in the care of an animal, and teaches children about differences in the animal world. If you or someone in your family is an animal lover, than the Philadelphia Zoo might be the perfect family vacation destination.

An obvious first thing to do at the zoo is simply to wander around and look at the animals. This in itself could be an all day event. There are hundreds of different species that make the zoo their home. Check out the "standard" animals such as lions, bears, and monkeys, or visit the exotic frogs and lizards in the reptile and amphibian house. There is also a bird valley with birds such as the Flamingo, Northern Bald Eagle and the ever entertaining penguins. Be sure to check out the Zoo's new arrivals as well. They currently include a baby Humboldt Penguin, a baby Sifaka, and a Red Panda.

If learning about animals is a high priority, then be sure to check out one of the dozens of animal shows. Many of these shows are offered every day, and provide a more up close and personal look at the animals. For kids who just have to be touching things, the Children's zoo is probably the place to head. This area has a petting zoo and opportunities to feed ducks, chickens and goats. Another fun option is to attend an animal feeding. Vampire bats, penguins, crocodiles and giant tortoises all have to eat, so why not pull up a seat and watch! There are also a number of lectures and interactive sessions where guests can learn more about animals such as the Bald Eagle, Bears, Kangaroos and Gorillas.

If these ideas aren't enough to sell you on the idea, the zoo also offers several special attractions. Kids will likely have a blast at the Birds of Australia venue. Guests will be delighted to see beautiful Lorikeets and Lories perching on their arms and shoulders. Guests also have the chance to feed the birds. Guests can also opt for several rides. The swan boats are self-peddled boats that seat up to three people, and there is a railroad that runs through the zoo. If the preference lies with real animal, visitors can ride ponies, horses and even Camels! For maximum enjoyment of the Philadelphia Zoo, it may be best to go earlier in the day, when the animals are most active. Also remember to bring comfortable shoes and sunscreen.

Chances are you won't be able to leave the zoo without hearing the question, "Can I have a pet tiger cub?" You now have a choice; either explain why tiger cubs are illegal to own as pets, and tell your kid something about health and safety code violations, or make a stop at the zoo's gift shop, and find a decent tiger cub substitute. Whatever the case, the Zoo is certainly a recipe for a day of fun.

Sounds like a place our 3 little ones would love. I will check it out next time we're in Philly
