New York City - Advice on where to go

New York City is without a doubt one of the busiest cities in the world. This city is the most populous city in the United States, and is a center for culture, trade, business, entertainment, education and fashion. It would take months to fully explore all the exciting attractions and sites that can be found in this city, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great place for a student tour, or a graduating class trip. On the contrary, there is so much to do, that nearly any type of tour is possible. Whether the trip is for educational purposes, or simply to celebrate a graduation, there is an endless supply of entertainment in New York City.

While traveling in New York City, the best way to get around is to use one of the public mass transits. Most people in NYC prefer using one of these methods to using automobiles, and many families in this city don't even own a car. The New York City Subway is the largest rapid transit system in the world, and most stops are open 24 hours a day. There is also an extensive bus fleet, and commuter rail system. Of course there are numerous highways and expressways leading in and out of NYC, so driving a bus or taking a cab is an option, but be warned that New York City traffic jams are notorious for occurring nearly any time of day, so your travel time can be greatly increased.

Tourism is important to NYC, and there are many popular destinations that tour groups usually have in mind. Among them are Ellis Island, the Empire Sate Building, Top of the Rock and the Statue of Liberty. There are multiple museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or groups can take a walk through Central Park, the New York Botanical Garden, or the Bronx Zoo. There is also quite an entertainment venue in NYC, which students on grad trips will find especially intriguing. Students can take in a show on Broadway, referring to any of the 39 theaters located on 42nd street. The New York City Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic all provide opportunities to see concerts by some of the leading performing arts groups in the world. There are also multiple venues for indie, punk and rock bands, either popular or underground.

Culture is an inescapable part of NYC. This city has been a hub for immigration since the 19th century. This has resulted in a number of cultural neighborhoods including a large Jewish population, Asians, Irish, Latinos, and Indians. These neighborhoods feature an abundance of food, shopping and atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in America. Students will feel as if they've stepped into another culture by simply stepping to a different block. NYC has also been a huge center for jazz and an abundance of jazz performances can be found from upscale jazz performances to coffeehouse and nightclub blues.

New York City offers more than many people can imagine from live music to historical sites and other endless attractions. Just visiting the city and getting a feel for the energy and culture that permeate the air can make for an unforgettable trip or tour. Consider planning a trip to New York City, either for a student group or for a graduate trip.

I remember visiting some friends when they lived, I think, in the Bronx. Maybe it was Brooklyn - I just don't remember!

Anyway, just down the street was a small house in a park, and it was old enough that once George Washington used it as his HQ. I am sure it was just before the battle on Manhatten Island, but again I may be wrong.

The point is, there are so many small places with historic significance in the greater New York City area, that even if you lived there, you'd be hard pressed to see them all!

Thanks for a great hub - I am hoping to get to N.Y. C. this summer to visit a niece and her husband.

NYC is very multi-cultural! Sometimes city can be a great adventure. I love the Subway!
